Something about Berkshire
The name of Berkshire comes from the Celtic berroc meaning 'hilly place'. It is the only royal county in England, officially sanctioned since 1958. It is now just a ceremonial county, administered by six unitary authorities.
Berkshire was one of the oldest counties in Britain, being first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 860.
Famous for
Queen Victoria made her first railway journey in 1842, travelling in a special Royal train from Slough to Paddington Station in London.
The Cox's Orange Pippin apple was first grown by Richard Cox at his nursery at Colnbrook, near Slough, in 1857.
T.E.Lawrence lost his 1919 draft of the Seven Pillars of Wisdom at Reading Railway Station, and had to rewrite the text from the memory, while Oscar Wilde was the most famous resident of Reading Gaol from 1895-7, while serving his sentence of two years for 'gross indecency' relating to his homosexuality.
